MONITORING STUDENT
PROGRESS
All instructional staff members at the school and at the school
administrative office are responsible for monitoring student progress.
Assessments and data-driven decision making are paramount to the
on-going achievement of Suffolk Public Schools’ students. Student
assessment information is available to parents throughout the school
year to monitor the progress of their students. The middle schools
provide the following information to help parents track student
progress:
Form A and B Assessments
These quizzes are used to assess specific skills in English and
math. Think of these as checkpoints during the nine weeks grading
period. For mastery, students need to earn an 80% or higher. If
they do not, teachers will provide reteaching of those skills
before a student is reassessed using Form B of the quiz. Students
still not reaching the goal of 80% will be retaught before the
final assessment which is the grading period test. The promotion
policy for middle school requires students to master 80% of the
Standards of Learning assessments in English and math. A summary
of each student’s performance generated through SOLO (Standards
of Learning On-line) is sent home with each report card.
Grading Period Tests
A grading period test is given in each of the four core area
classes: English, social studies, science, and mathematics. These
tests are designed to provide students an opportunity to demonstrate
knowledge learned during a specific grading period.
Interim Reports
Progress reports are issued to students midway through the nine
weeks grading period. These detailed reports include grades for
specific assignments, the current grading period average, and
missing assignments.
Report Cards
Report cards are issued at the end of the nine weeks grading
period. These include the final grading period average for each
class.
