SUMMER PROGRAMS

Criterion for Promotion and Remediation
for Middle School Summer School Attendance
Summer School Student Application

Summer School for Possible Promotion

  • The core subjects (English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies) will be offered.
  • Students may take only one subject in summer school.
  • Students who failed one core course may repeat that course in summer school to be considered for promotion in the fall.
  • Regular attendance and academic achievement will be required for promotion. Regular attendance is defined as having no more than three absences during summer school.
  • Weekly progress and performance on end of summer assessments will determine academic achievement for promotion.

Summer School for Remediation

  • The three core subjects (English, Mathematics, and Social Studies) will be offered for remediation purposes.
  • Students who passed all four core subjects but failed at least one end of year SOL test are required to attend summer school or receive other approved remediation for that course.
  • Students who passed all core subjects but did not master the division's SOL ongoing assessments are required to attend summer school or receive other approved remediation.
  • Students failing two or more classes will be considered for summer remediation. If a student fails two or more core subjects, he/she will be placed in a core subject as follows:
English If the student failed English and at least one other core subject
Math If the student passed English, but failed Math and at least one other core subject
Social Studies If the student passed English and Math but failed Social Studies and Science
