Star Award Winners - Winter 2008

Congratulations to this quarter’s Star Award winners, who were recognized at the March 13th Suffolk School Board meeting. The honorees were awarded a U.S. Savings Bond, courtesy of program co-sponsor the Suffolk Education Foundation, as well as a certificate and distinctive star lapel pin.

The winner of the Star Award for Support Staff is Cheryll Nelson, an instructional assistant at Forest Glen Middle School. Nominated by reading intervention teacher Heather Howell, Mrs. Nelson works in the reading lab, in an inclusion classroom, and in a special education classroom. She leads small reading groups, works one-on-one with struggling students, prepares materials for lessons, and organizes records and student work samples. Ms. Howell wrote: “Mrs. Nelson works with students three grade levels, and has come to know and respond effectively to their individual responsibilities. She knows when to offer a shoulder or an ear, and when to be firm and structured.” Others at Forest Glen also applaud Mrs. Nelson’s positive attitude, flexibility, loyalty, and eagerness to serve.

The winner of the Star Award for Instructional Staff
is Faye Goodwin,
an educational diagnostician assigned to one middle and three elementary schools. Nominated by Sarah Cook, a 7th-grade student at John Yeates Middle School, Mrs. Goodwin was praised for her kindness, encouragement and determination to help Sarah overcome severe learning disabilities in reading. Sarah credits her current academic success to Mrs. Goodwin. An honor roll student, Sarah now loves school. She said that Mrs. Goodwin “is much more than a reading tutor to me. In fact,
I really think of her as a person who will always be in my life. I kiddingly refer to her as my grandma.”
