High School (9th - 12th Grade)
As
a high school freshman, did you ever think "four more years
of fine-tuning here and then I'll be part of the real world"?
The
high school educational experience should enable the students to
develop their minds and bodies to their fullest capacity socially,
physically, morally, intellectually and psychologically. While instruction
is the top priority, other opportunities are available to broaden
students’ horizons.
Students
are required to take 4 years of English, 3 years of math (at or
above the level of Algebra), 3 years of science, 1 year of Virginia
and U.S. History, 1 year of Virginia and U.S. Government, 1 year
of World History/Geography, 1 year of Fine Arts or Practical Art,
2 years of Physical Education and 6 electives to earn a 22-credit
diploma. However, students are encouraged to opt for a 24-credit
advanced studies diploma, which requires another year each of math,
science and world history/geography, 3 years of foreign language,
and 2 electives. Students are also required to pass the Standards
of Learning end-of-course tests in six courses to earn a standard
diploma and in nine courses to earn an advanced studies diploma
before they can graduate. Block scheduling allows for longer class
periods on alternate days for most classes.
TECH
PREP:
Tech Prep in Suffolk Public Schools is a combined secondary and
minimum two-year post-secondary seamless, integrated program of
study with options for work-based learning in business, marketing,
or industrial technologies. Students enrolling at Paul D. Camp Community
College may earn up to 6 credits -- with no costs or fees -- for
completing the high school portion of the program.
GOVERNOR’S
SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS: This regional school designed for talented
high school students from Suffolk and seven other neighboring school
divisions provides highly specialized instruction in visual arts,
music, dance, performing arts, and theater. Suffolk students travel
by school bus to Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University
and Tidewater Ballet to attend classes each afternoon.
CAREER
OPTIONS: Students
may begin career development in high school through a variety of
career and technical education programs. Courses are offered in
agriculture, business, marketing, technology, family & consumer
sciences, and health & medical sciences. Cooperative education
and job shadowing opportunities enable students to gain valuable
workplace experience. The Pruden Center for Industry and Technology
is a joint venture between Suffolk and Isle of Wight County and
offers morning and afternoon classes. High school students can prepare
for careers in early childhood education, auto body and repair service,
automotive service technology, building trades, culinary arts, cosmetology,
welding, multimedia communications, oracle, nurse aide, electronics,
utility/heavy construction technology, CISCO computer networking,
PC technology, emergency medical technician, and veterinary assistant.
ADVANCED
STUDIES COURSES: Students have the opportunity to enroll in
a variety of advanced courses, including Advanced Placement (A.P.)
Language & Composition, A.P. Calculus, A.P. Statistics, A.P.
Biology, A.P. Chemistry, A.P. Environmental Science, A.P. United
States History, A.P. Government & Politics, Honors English,

earn both high school credit and community college credit. All dual-credit,
advanced placement, and honors courses are weighted because of the
advanced level of these courses. Guidance counselors at each school
can provide additional information.
ALTERNATIVES:
Students who are having trouble meeting the academic challenges
of the regular classroom can be placed in the Work-Plus program
to earn a GED or Turlington Woods School, which both emphasize small
group instruction and practical application of basic academic skills.
