SOLs Covered...

For more information, go to the Virginia Department of Education website

The Math SOLs that we cover will be divided into units:

Number and Number Sense will include decimals, fractions and percents, ratios, least common multiple, greatest common factor, prime and composite numbers, even and odd numbers, comparing and ordering whole numbers, fractions and decimals.  Number and Number Sense covers SOLs 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4 and 6.5

Computation and Estimation will include solving word problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division  with fractions and mixed numbers, estimation and solving multi-step word problems that involve whole numbers, decimal division, decimals and fractions.  Computation and Estimation problems do not allow the use of a calculator and cover SOLs 6.6, 6.7, and 6.8.

Measurement will include comparing and converting units of measurement with both the US Customary and Metric System.  The intent of this standard is for students to make ballpark comparisons and not to memorize conversion factors between US Customary and metric units.  This unit also includes estimating the length, weight/mass, area and liquid volume/capacity using units of measure, area and perimeter of polygons, area and circumference of a circle and angles.  This is a BIG ONEMeasurement includes SOLs 6.9, 6.10, 6.11, 6.12 and 6.13.

Geometry will include identifying, classifying and describing the characteristics of plane figures, congruent and non-congruent figures, angle and perpendicular bisectors and solid figures.  Geometry will cover SOLs 6.14, 6.15, 6.16 and 6.17.

Probability and Statistics will cover line, bar and circle graphs, stem and leaf plots, box and whisker plots, circle graphs, measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), range, sample spaces and probability.  Probability and Statistics will cover SOLS 6.18, 6.19 and 6.20.

Patterns, Functions, and Algebra will cover geometric and number patterns, patterns formed by powers of 10 and arithmetic sequences, positive exponents, perfect squares, square roots, scientific notation and algebraic equations.  Patterns, Functions and Algebra will cover SOLs 6.21, 6.22 and 6.23.
