SAFETY IN THE ART CLASSROOM
DEFINITONS:
1. SAFETY: To be free from harm or danger. 2. PRECAUTION: A measure taken beforehand to avoid danger 3. TOXIC: a harmful chemical or poison. 4. ASTM-D4236: Safe for children to use in grades K-6. 5. HEALTH LABEL: A special label indicating that a product is safe for a child the same as any product having ASTM-D42336 on it.
NAME THE THREE WAYS HARMFUL CHEMICALS GET INTO THE BODY:
1. SKIN—By absorption and cuts or wounds. 2. NOSE—by inhalation. 3. MOUTH—by ingestion.
SAFETY RULES:
1. Read labels and watch for hazardous chemicals. 2. 2. Substitute safer materials and processes such as water-based supplies. 3. Work in ventilated areas. 4. Store supplies in appropriate safe containers. 5. Make sure materials will not fall off shelves. 6. Do not store together chemicals that will react with each other. 7. Do not eat or drink around supplies while working. 8. Keep your hands clean. 9. Do not put objects in your mouth. 10. Protect your face and eyes with proper face shields or goggles. 11. Do not blow dust of any kind. 12. Wear hearing protectors around high noise level operations. 13. Respirators must be worn for some techniques. 14. Store flammable materials according to fire department regulations. 15. Do not allow children to use adult materials. 16. Use water-based art supplies. (Check for lead, chromium, cadmium, and other toxic pigments.) 17. Do not use epoxy, instant glue, or rubber cement. Hazardous steps should be done by the teacher or other responsible adult.
