Welcome to Latin I! |
|
Parents, encourage your students to keep up with their daily assignments and keep all quiz and test papers for future reference and study. Also, encourage students to keep their notebook neat and in order. Assignments should be in chronological order and dated. Students are responsible for asking the teacher for assistance whenever necessary and making arrangements to make up quizzes and tests within a 5-day period. At John Yeates, I am only available for extra help from 10:20 until 11:15. Don’t forget that I teach at three schools, and must leave for my second school between 11:00 and 11:30 each day. |

Homework Assignments:
As a general rule, we do all of the textbook exercises for each lesson that are in the textbook and workbook, plus write derivative sentences for each vocabulary word that has any derivatives, and copy each lesson’s vocabulary into our notebooks. In addition, we get at least one vocabulary crossword puzzle to complete for each lesson, take a vocabulary quiz on each lesson (only up through Lesson 6) and a test on the grammar for every two lessons.
Students have the opportunity to see their classwork and homework assignments one week at a time in the classroom, displayed on a dry erase poster, called an AgendaMate. Students are expected to copy all assignments down when they are first given and to keep up with them. I also post upcoming quiz and test dates at the bottom of the AgendaMate.
In the second marking period, students were expected to memorize a song, Adeste Fideles, in Latin, for a quiz grade by December 20th. On December 21st, we celebrated Saturnalia, an ancient Roman festival which involved students bringing food or drink items to school that morning. Participation by bringing an item counts as a quiz grade.
Students were given a mid-term exam review sheet on January 12th and class time was allotted for ample exam review.
The third nine weeks, our memorization project is the Pledge of Allegiance, in Latin, which will be due by Friday, March 9th. Students are encouraged, as always, to bring in a tape for the teacher to record the new project, or bring 35 cents to purchase a ready-made tape. There will also be a few class work projects making “foldables” with grammatical information to keep for handy reference.
During the first two weeks of March, students will be asked to make a poster promoting either foreign languages in general, or Latin, in particular. This will be a Daily grade. This activity is in celebration of foreign language week.

During the fourth nine weeks, our memorization project is “America, the Beautiful”, which must be recited from memory to the teacher by Friday, May 25th. This date was moved back due to SOL testing (May 16-18). Progress Reports go home on May 18th. Parents, please make sure that your child is working hard to complete all assignments on time, all the way through exams. Final exams will be given on the half days, June 11, 12 & 13. Thank you for letting me work with your child this year. |
