March Access Newsletter for Seniors

March makes me think of green for springtime and shamrocks for St. Patrick’s day, and money for college.  March is also the deadline for filing your financial aid form and also for turning in those scholarship applications.  If you have filed your financial aid form, then you are waiting to receive an award letter from your colleges telling you how much financial aid they are going to offer you.  Do you remember in the movie, Jerry Maguire, when the character played by Cuba Gooding Jr. kept saying, “Show me the money”?  Well, that’s what I’m asking you to do now.  If you have received any financial aid letters from your colleges I want you to bring them in to my office and I’ll make a copy and give you the original right back.  This way we can keep track of all the financial aid received by students.  It is also a requirement to be eligible for the drawing for the $1000 scholarship that will be awarded by Access.

If you haven’t filed your financial aid form yet, there is still time.  You can still get some financial aid, but it might not be as much as you would have received if you had filed before your college’s priority deadline.  Ok, yes, some colleges do have March 15th  or even April 1st as their deadline, but have you gone on-line and checked to make sure?  Remember, this is different from their application deadline.  Look on the financial aid webpage of the colleges to find out what they require.  Some schools like UVA have their own forms in addition to the FAFSA, so be sure to check that too.

Also, be saving up for that room deposit.  Most colleges want you to put a deposit down by May 1st to guarantee a place in the class or the dorms.  You often cannot use your financial aid for this, so start socking it away now.  The deposits vary from school to school, but are usually around $250 or more.  Access cannot help with this fee.  Sometimes in cases where the EFC is 0, the colleges will allow you to use your financial aid to make the deposit.

So, keep in touch with your Access Advisor… “show me the money” and come to me with any questions or concerns about your financial aid. Have a great spring !
