March Access Newsletter for Juniors

Now is the time to be checking out your college choices.  You have to choose 4 colleges to send your SAT or ACT scores to, and you should consider trying to do a campus tour also.  If the schools you are interested in are far away, then you might want to plan a visit during spring break or during the summer. But, you should also consider touring a campus nearby just to give yourself some basis for comparison.  Most colleges have tours on Saturdays as well as during the week.  Go to the college website, click on “Admissions” or “Prospective Students” and look for anything that says “campus visits” or “campus tours” or “open house”.  Some schools want you to let them know ahead of time so they can have enough tour guides ready to give you a tour after their short information session.  You find out what the college admissions people are looking for, and this will help you with your applications next year.

Juniors should be aware that now is the time to apply if you are interested in one of the military academies.  You usually have to get a Congressional Appointment to get into the academies, and our Virginia Congressional Delegation is holding an information session if you are interested.  Here is the information we were sent:

On Sauturday March 25, 2006, The Virginia Congressional Delegation will hold Adademy Day 2006 at Reasoner Hall on Marine Corps Base Quantico in Quantico, VA, from 10 am to 1 pm.  Academy Day is open to all high school students and will have representatives from the 5 service academies, The U.S. Military Academy, The U.S. Naval Academy, The U.S. Air Force Academy, The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and The U.S. Caost Guard Academy.

If you have interested students there are information sheets and directions to Reasoner Hall in the Guidance Office.  For more information parents may contact Jason Gray in Colonial Heights (Forbes’ Office) at (804)526-4969.

This is the only session they will hold, so if you want to go to one of the academies, you should go to this meeting.

The May SAT is the day after PROM, so it may not be a good time for you to take the test.  The deadline to register for the May test is April 3.  You can also take the test in June, and the deadline to register for the June test is April 28th.  If you would like to see if you are eligible to take the SAT for FREE, then you need to ask me for a fee waiver application.  If you qualify for a fee waiver for the test, you also can get a waiver for 4 free college applications, so see your Access Advisor for more information.
