Heather Nygaard, Lakeland High School senior and Art III student, has placed nationally with her PTA Reflections Visual Art entry!
A mythical dragon has descended on LHS! Art III student Scott Asbell created “Avimore”, a dragon made with a recycled bass and papier mache. His creative sculpture will be on display in the LHS library.
Perfect Fifth-In the Still of the Night Congratulations Heather Nygaard!!! Heather’s visual art entry in the PTA Reflections contest has won first place in the state of Virginia!!! Heather’s pencil drawing will now compete nationally in Washington, DC. Mr. Daniel Waller
Senior BETA Donates $500.00 to Haiti The Senior Beta Club donated a $500 check to the Red Cross to help the victims of the Earthquake in Haiti. In Memory of On January 9, 2010 Lakeland lost one of its finest family members, Michael Lee, Class of 2010. Michael was an honor student. Sheila Williams, Lakeland Guidance Counselor, describes him as a hard worker, respectful, diligent, bright, and willing to help anyone. Michael had applied to Hampton University, Shaw University, and North Carolina Central University. Michael played cornerback on Lakeland's football team during his senior year, was a member of DECA and ran track for Lakeland during his junior year. On Friday, January 15, there will be a viewing from 12:00 Noon until 6:00 p.m. at T.E. Cooke's Funeral Home located on Tynes Street in Suffolk. The wake will be from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Homegoing Celebration will be on Saturday, January 16, at 1:00 p.m. at New Mount Joy for the Living Church located on County Street. A memorial fund has been set up through Sun Trust Bank for anyone wishing to donate funds to help the family. On Monday morning, January 11, 2010, students assembled at the Lakeland Flag Pole to pray for Michael's family and friends. Approximately 150 students and faculty were in attendence. They also signed a memorial bulletin board and poster for Michael. On Wednesday, January 13, a memorial service was held in the Lakeland High School Auditorium. Students, administrators, friends, and faculty members spoke in remembrance of Michael. Even though, Michael's life was short, he made a positive impact on the lives of those that knew him and he will always be remembered. Michael is survied his mother, Karen Lee, his brother, Shawn, and his Aunt Beverely, and a host of cousins and friends.
Congratulations: Congratulations to the Marching Quiet Storm for placing 1st in the Norfolk State Homecoming Parade. The Marching Quiet Storm has been invited to participate in the Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC. representing the State of Virginia in the The official date is May 31st 2010 and it will be televised worldwide. The band has several events planned to raise money to take care of the expense of the event. Tickets Family Pass-$125--Allows entrance for you and your immediate family to all regular season sporting events. Student Pass-$35.00 Entrance to all regular season sporting events. Three LHS art students participated in a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts workshop on Oct. 30, 2009. The workshop was held at Nansemond Suffolk Academy. Students were lead by a visiting artist from the VMFA and learned techniques in working with glass. LHS art students visited the Suffolk Museum Nov. 17. Students viewed the 2009 Annual Juried Exhibition which highlights many of our area artists. Linda Bunch, the director of the Suffolk Art League, lead the students through the show with interesting information about the artists and their medium. Students also participated in a short workshop with Newport News artist Kat Allison. Ms. Allison directed students in mono-printing. Students were able to experiment with various techniques and created two works of art.

Ed Smither Sportsmanship Award The Edward Smither Sportsmanship Award was presented to Hickory High School at the Lakeland/Hickory Football game. The Edward Smither Sportsmanship Award is presented each year in memory of Edward Smither former athletic director of Lakeland High School.
