I started my career as an educator well before graduating from college.  During four of my five years at Tennessee Temple University, I volunteered as a youth counselor, gathering valuable real-life experience with young people.  In 1988 I graduated with my Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education with a minor in English and headed to Chesapeake where, over the course of twelve years, I worked as a teacher, coach, yearbook advisor, class sponsor, and middle school administrator.

Thinking it was time to “try something new,” I stepped out of school work in the summer of 2000 and represented the Walsworth Publishing Company as the regional manager for western New York.  By Thanksgiving I realized how much I missed being an educator and by March I was applying for teaching positions back here in Hampton Roads.  (The 156 inches of snow that was dumped on us there in Buffalo certainly helped to convince my wife and me to return to the warmth of Virginia, too!)

In January of 2002 I joined Suffolk Public Schools as a part of the Nansemond River High School staff, serving as a teacher to honors and standard-level sophomores and juniors as well as Advanced Placement Language and Composition students; I also sponsored the yearbook and chaired the English Department.  I had some wonderful experiences and worked with some wonderful people and I am truly thankful for my time as an NRHS Warrior!

The past few months have been an exciting time of change for my family and me. In April my third daughter was born; in May I earned my Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of Virginia; and in June I was offered the opportunity of joining the Mack Benn, Jr. Elementary School staff as the assistant principal.  After over eighteen years of working with the “big kids,” I’m thrilled about starting the educational adventure with the elementary students.  Watching teenagers I’d taught receive their diplomas is certainly rewarding, but it will be equally rewarding for me to be a part of those first steps that the Mack Benn students take along their path toward academic success. I plan to use my instructional experience and administrative knowledge to support our K-5 graders as they grow into solid students and citizens.

My wife, my daughters Molly, Annie, and Lillian, and I are all so happy and hopeful about becoming part of the Mack Benn, Jr. Elementary family!  I’m ready to dive in and help the Marlins continue to reach bigger and better goals.

Please swing by the school so we can talk and establish a positive working relationship for the good of all of our children.

Here for you,

Mr. Bob Brennan
