Nansemond River High School has confirmed its commitment to increasing student achievement and the number of students graduating well-prepared for college and careers by joining the Southern Regional Education Board’s High Schools That Work (HSTW) network.  HSTW is an effort-based school improvement initiative founded on the conviction that most students can master rigorous academic and career/technical studies if school leaders and teachers create an environment that motivates students to make the effort to succeed.

HSTW is the nation’s first large-scale effort to engage state, district, and school leaders in partnerships with teachers, students, parents, and the community to raise student achievement in high school and the middle grades. It is based on the simple belief that most students become “smarter” through effort and hard work.

Schools that join the HSTW network agree to increase the rigor and relevance of their classroom instruction.  They work toward this goal by supporting their academic and career/technical teachers with professional development, materials, and time to work together; by promoting student participation in a system of school- and work-based learning that integrates academics with applied learning; and by promoting a vision of high achievement for all students among faculty and staff, parents, students, and community members.

The Southern Regional Education Board is a multi-state compact for education, founded in 1948.  High Schools That Work is the largest high school improvement effort in the United States, with more than 1,100 school sites in 32 states.  High Schools That Work is supported by member states and grants from organizations, such as the Wallace Foundation, Goldman Sachs Foundation, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Carnegie Corporation, Whitehead Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Mission Statement

The mission of schools in the HSTW network is to prepare high school students for both postsecondary edudation and a career by having students complete a solid academic core and either an academic, a career/technical or a blended concentration. High standards in the workplace and growing numbers of high school graduates seeking postsecondary educarion are primary factors in the need for most students to complete a challenging program of study.
