High School students must take Standards of Learning tests.  Beginning with the 9th grade class of 1998-99, students must complete 22 standard units of credit to receive a Standard Diploma and 24 standard units of credit to receive an Advanced Studies Diploma.  A standard unit of credit is based on 140 clock hours of instruction.

In addition, beginning with the 9th grade class of 1998-99, students must earn verified credits as well as standard units of credit.  A verified credit is awarded when, in addition to successfully meeting course requirements, the student passes SOL tests for certain courses in high schools SOL tests for certain courses in high school.
