If you would like to apply for any of the scholarships listed in this bulletin, complete a scholarship request form, available from 12th grade English and Government Teachers and in the Guidance Office.  Applications / information will be returned to you within two or three days.  If you do not receive your applications/ information … come to Guidance and see Mr. Mitnick or Mrs. Williams

University of Virginia Football Student Manager Scholarships

Amount:     Increases from $1698 / year to $6790 / per year over four years

Criteria:      Applicants must be interested in serving as a Student Manager or Equipment Manager to the U Va. Football Program. Announcement includes responsibilities and time commitments.

Deadline:    None given – contact information included in announcement.

Virginia Tech Corp of Cadets Emerging Leader Scholarship

Amount:        Up to a maximum of $2000 / year for 4 years ($8,000)

Criteria:         Applicants must have applied toVirginia Tech and the Virginia Tech Corp of Cadets.  Applicants must submit a FAFSA form and indicate Virginia Tech as a recipient institution. Academic merit is a qualification as well.

Deadline:      All Corp of Cadet applicants are given consideration for this scholarship.

Amount:     $1000

Criteria:      Applicant must be a graduating senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
Applicant must have submitted a FAFSA form.

Alpha Delta Kappa – Suffolk Chapter, Women’s Educational Scholarship

Amount:        $500

Criteria:         Applicant must be a female,
graduating senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA and the applicant must be entering the field of education.

Jamari W. Atkinson Scholarship

Amount:      $1000 / 2 awards

Criteria:        Applicant must be a graduating senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a definite plan to major in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline.  Financial need required.

Deadline:     May 9, 2008

Barton Ford Lincoln / Mercury All-American Scholarship Program

Amount:     $1000 – only one student can be     nominated from NRHS

Criteria:      Eligibility: Minimum GPA 3.0.  Applicant must demonstrate leadership, scholarship, poise, confidence and involvement in student and / or community activities.

Deadline:    Application must be received by April 30th (to Mr. Mitnick)to be considered by NRHS Scholarship Committee.

Amount:     Unspecified

Criteria:       Applicants must be able to demonstrate through their application and recommendations character, leadership, scholastic ability and  financial need. Essay required – “Why would you like to
receive this scholarship?”

Churchland Kiwanis / Coleman Nursery Scholarship

Amount:     $1000 / multiple awards

Criteria:      The applicant must be able to document a history of school, volunteer and community activities in grades 9 – 12. A statement of financial need and an essay on career plans and educational goals is required.

Hobbs, Sarah Crocker Memorial Scholarship

Amount:        $750

Criteria:         Applicants will be judged on their character and conduct (as determined by letters of recommendation)

Deadline:    Interested students should submit a resume detailing their volunteer work and submit three letters of recommendation to Mr. Mitnick by April 30, 2008.  NRHS nominee will be chosen from applicants

Suffolk Chapter – Norfolk State University Alumni  Association Scholarship

Amount:     $500

Criteria:      Applicant must be admitted to
or in the process of being admitted to Norfolk State University (copy of admission letter required). Applicant must submit a list of Honors and Awards with their application.
Essay Required – “Why I should be the recipient of the Suffolk Chapter of the Norfolk State Alumni Association Scholarship.”

Deadline:    June 9, 2008

Omega Phi Psi Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Iota Chapter, Suffolk, VA

Amount:     Unspecified

Criteria:      Applicant must be an African-american male student, who will be attending a four year college or university in August, 2008.  Applicants will be judged on  special interests and talents,  extra-curricular involvement, and participation in community organizations or activities.

Suffolk Administrative Leadership Association (SALSA) Scholarship

Amount:     $500

Criteria:      The applicant must be a Suffolk resident with a minimum 3.00 GPA attend a two or four year college in September, 2008 with any major.  Essay on “Explain why you should receive this scholarship.”

Deadline:    May 7, 2008

Suffolk Lions Club Scholarship

Amount:     $500 for a Nansemond River Student

Criteria     Applicant must have “maintained excellent scholastic standing throughout his / her high school career”.  Also must rank in top 20% of the Class of 2087.  Other criteria will include extra-curricular activities and documentation of strong moral character.  Preference will be given to a visual and/ or hearing impaired student.

Deadline:    May 15, 2008 to Mr. Mitnick.

Amount:     Unspecified – award is renewable

Criteria:      Applicant must be attending Ferrum College, Virginia Wesleyan College or Randolph Macon College.  Statement of goals, vision and self improvement required.

Amount:     $500

Criteria:      Applicant must be a student who demonstrates the commitment to academic achievement and community / public service.

Suffolk Council of PTA/PTSA Scholarship

Amount:     $400 award to one NRHS senior

Criteria:      Applicant must have a minimum 2.50 GPA.  Applicant must write an essay (between 200 and 400 words) on “History could be made in the 2008 Presidential Election…How could it affect your life?” Specific direction are contained in instructions.

Deadline: May 23, 2008

Tidewater Community College – F. Ludwig Diehn Chorus Scholarships

Amount:     $650 – several awards

Criteria:      Applicant must be attending the any campus of TCC and be enrolled in MUSIC 137 – Chorus at the Portsmouth Campus for the entire academic year, serve as a section leader and recruit student for chorus.

Deadline:    June 6, 2008

Amount:     $1000

Criteria:      Applicant must be able to document 100 hours of community service related to Veterans (of the U.S. military) or Veteran Families in the past 24 months.

Opportunities Worthy of Your Attention

Virginia Mentor SAT & ACT Test Preparation Is a free, on-line SAT and ACT test preparation program open to all students in Virginia.  Students must log on to: www.virginiamentor.org  create an account then they will have access to customized test preparation courses.  The website features tutorials, practice sessions and students receive comparable scores and percentile rank to SAT and ACT scores.

Graduating seniors are reminded that a copy of all scholarship award letters and college financial aid awards are to be submitted to Mr. Mitnick, Scholarship Chairperson, and Ms. Collins, ACCESS College Counselor. 
This information will be used to document scholarship awards and grants that will be listed in the graduation program.
