Yes, it's that time of year again to make out our Holiday Wish Lists, ask the question “Whose house this year?”, decide between a real or a not-so-real tree, gather baking supplies, fight for parking spots, etc. But, then come the smiles… and it is all worth it. |

In this issue, the club will be offering numerous ways to be a bit more green this Thanksgiving and Holiday Season. Our cover stories will include types of organic foods to serve the family, safer/less toxic organic household cleaners, LED outdoor holiday lights, and how to accumulate less trash this holiday season.
Speaking on the subject of trash, a very simple way of accumulating less this Holiday season is to use gift bags instead of wrapping paper. |

How to Light Your House and Save MoneyBy: Michelle Amico |

As we all know, Christmas is coming. Some of you may be wondering which lights are better for the holidays, LED or incandescent? Fluorescent/LED lights use 80% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to ten times longer. They produce less heat, so they are much more efficient. Fluorescent bulbs are 4 to 6 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs and produce 50 to 100 lumens per watt. That’s |
|
why when you buy a fluorescent light bulb of 15 watts, they produce the same amount of light that a 60 watt incandescent light bulb would. LED holiday lights are $10 for a strand of 50 lights (16 feet). They are a lot brighter than regular holiday lights, and last for up to ten years. However, there are many ways to conserve electricity without using these special types of light bulbs. The one |
|
that we should use the most is turning the lights off whenever you leave a room. A couple other common ways are keeping your light fixtures clean, and using a timer for outdoor lighting to turn it off when not needed.
