Robertson Elementary is one of the smallest schools in the division. Its
small size provides the students with a close-knit neighborhood feeling.
Robertson Elementary School is located in the Whaleyville section of
Suffolk; however students from downtown Suffolk comprise a large portion of
the student population. For this reason, the school faculty travels to St.
Paul’s R.Z.U.A. Church in south Suffolk to conduct parent-teacher
conferences. This outreach project has strengthened communication between
families and teachers who might not otherwise have met.
The Robertson Elementary staff has an average of over 10 years of classroom teaching experience. Approximately 68 percent have even earned their master's degrees. The teachers daily teach The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). The SOLs are a framework of basic skills students in each grade level should learn in English, math, science, social studies, and technology. The SOL tests are given each spring to measure students' success in meeting these state standards. All schools statewide must have 70 percent of its students in certain grade levels passing the SOL tests by 2006 to meet accreditation. Robertson Elementary has been fully accredited since spring of 2004!
Robertson
Elementary participates in the Accelerated Reader and Math programs
in all grade levels. In
2003, Robertson also received a grant from the Reading
First Program. Only 76 schools in Virginia received the funding that will
provide funding to assist teachers with reading instruction and provide
new
materials for students over the next six years. The 2008 - 2009 school
year will be the last year of the Reading First Grant. Robertson Elementary
is also receiving VA-PIRC assistance which wil help improve academic achievement
through parent/school partnerships.
