Design & Technical Information
In April 2006, Suffolk Public Schools hired RRMM Architects to design a new 800-student prototypical elementary school. This design is a modified version of our Creekside Elementary prototype with two-story classroom wings in order to fit a more compact site. Construction is currently underway with completion scheduled for Fall 2008. The design provides the following distinguishing features:
- Clear separation of academic houses that allow for grade level separation, natural light through exterior windows and easy separation from public areas
- Commons spaces, teacher centers, and restroom cores in each house
- A gym and cafeteria arrangement that allows sharing of the two spaces for special large-group events
- A plan that is flexible and easily modified to fit the specific needs of the school system
- Media Center is central to plan, accessible to public with natural lighting through clerestory windows
- Clear separation of bus and automobile traffic for safe egress from the site and congestion reduction
- Building exterior exhibits a “playful” character but incorporates low-maintenance, enduring materials
