Students at John F. Kennedy Middle School are organized into teams which offer various opportunities for academic cooperative learning and personal growth. Teachers cooperatively plan lessons and routinely meet to monitor student progress and plan interdisciplinary topics. John F. Kennedy Middle School maintains partnerships with families through quarterly newsletters, parent-teacher conferences, PTA meetings, and our annual family night.

We are particularly proud of the success of our Accelerated Reader program and its incentives which increased our library’s circulation by more than 300 percent. Additionally, our intense reading remediation programs proved successful as we worked collectively to achieve full accreditation.

Shining Stars
The school is very proud of our Rookie Teacher of the Year, Sarah Hildebrand, who was also named the division-wide winner.
Congratulations to Jan Goodin, JFK's Teacher of the Year.
The average teacher at John F. Kennedy has seven years of classroom experience, and 24 percent of the teachers hold master’s degrees.
Seventh-grade students launched a city-wide effort to bring a recyling program back to the city by creating commercials and presentations. They even visited City Council. Their efforts have resulted in a recycling club at JFK with hopes to spread their message throughout the school division.
Eighth-grade student Danna Libbey was selected to attend the 2007-08 session of The Governor's School for the Arts, studying theater.
The Drama Club presented its first production, "I'm Just a Kid," and donated proceeds to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.

 


2008 Test Scores
The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) are a framework of basic skills students in each grade level should learn in English, math, science, social studies, and technology.

The SOL tests are given each spring to measure students' success in meeting these state standards. State benchmarks for 2008 is a 70 percent pass rate in all subjects.
