The names of honor roll students are proudly displayed on the “Tree of Knowledge.”  Certificates for students honored for their “Random Acts of Kindness” are posted.

Students who attend Kilby Shores have an array of experiences which include participation in clubs (grades 3-5), fourth- and fifth-grade chorus, hands-on experiments, monthly Crew Hops, daily journal writing, field day, talented art and music classes, student assemblies designed to reinforce the Standards of Learning, field trips, Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math, Young Writers contest, PTA Reflections cultural arts competition, and a host of other activities.

In 2007, the school's Odyssey of the Mind team won regional and state titles for their creative problem-solving, and competed in the 28th Annual OM World Finals. The team of 7 students placed in the top 15 percent with a 9th place award among the 63 teams in their division. Odyssey of the Mind makes learning fun while giving kids the chance to explore their imaginations and express their creativity.

The Virginia Department of Education developed the Standards of Learning to establish a criteria of knowledge for each grade level.  State SOL tests are administered each spring to measure student achievement.  Teachers at Kilby Shores enhance the curriculum through the use of desktop computers, smartboards, laptop computers, math and science manipulatives, teacher-made games, and teacher-made assessments that model the format of state SOL tests, and a multitude of additional activities.
