In addition to its many fine programs, Lakeland boasts Suffolk’s High School Teachers of the Year for three of the past four years. With these and other award-winning teachers, along with its status as a fully accredited high school, Lakeland stands ready to prepare new generations of students for the challenges of the future.

Incoming ninth-graders benefit from the school's Freshmen Transition program. Now in its second year, the program provides some summer sessions on surviving the first year of high school and offers freshmen a mentor connection for the rest of the school year.

Learning does not end for Lakeland students when the bell calls out for the end of another academic day.  Our youth are involved in many extracurricular and co-curricular activities.  Many have found a special niche and opportunity to share of themselves through the activities of the Key Club, Beta Club, Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), DECA, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Future Farmers of America (FFA), Cavalier Singers, Drama, Gospel Choir, Chess Club, Academic Challenge Team, Athletics, Crime Stoppers, Ecology Club, Step Team, Band, and the Air Force Junior ROTC drill team. Through these organizations, and others outside of our school, students demonstrate that they are some of the brightest stars illuminating the city of Suffolk.

Our efforts to reach into the community have been reciprocated by several wonderful community partners.  We are thankful for the support of Amadas Industries, Barton Ford, International Paper, Sentara Obici Hospital, SunTrust Bank, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service.  It is through their efforts, and those of like-minded individuals, that our students are able to experience the uplifting of community support and interest.

Through the encouragement of home and school, but mostly through their own desire to excel, Lakeland students have received recognition and awards in many areas.  Not to be outdone by their younger counterparts, Lakeland teachers have received much acclaim in the community as well.  The greatest award received by any teacher at Lakeland, however, is the opportunity to revel in the success of their students.
