Nansemond River students participate in an extensive co-curricular and extracurricular activity program.  The athletic program offers 14 different sports. Clubs and organizations provide for students' varied interests. An award-winning visual / performing arts program is also available to the creative minded.

The “Warrior Spirit” is celebrated throughout the school year and makes Nansemond River High School a shining star among Suffolk Public Schools.

The Class of 2006 at Nansemond River High captured more than $2 million dollars in scholarship awards.  Graduates were accepted to 71 colleges, universities, business, nursing and trade schools throughout the United States. Some of them include: The United States Air Force Academy, Temple University, The Citadel, Howard University, Old Dominion University, the College of William & Mary, the University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Paul D. Camp Community College, Tidewater Community College, The Apprentice School at Northrop Grumman and ECPI.

Shining Stars
Courtney Mitchell, Elizabeth Riley, Peter Wagner and Vernell Woods will represent Suffolk Public Schools in the Residential Governors’ Schools for Humanities and Math, Science and Technology.  Courtney has been selected to represent Suffolk, VA at the CIBA Specialty Chemicals Summer Institute. Vernell will represent Nansemond River at the HOBY Youth Leadership Seminar.
Vaughan Wilson (Basketball) and Will Hirsch (Baseball) have both signed  NCAA Division I athletic grants in aid to The Citadel and Georgia Tech, respectively.
The “River Warriors” Relay for Life faculty team, participated for the first time this year to raise money for the fight against cancer.  “Coach” Amy Newsome had led the team to another victory by reaching our goal of $2,500.  Forty businesses in the community contributed items to be awarded in a Silent Auction which raised $1,256.
Teachers Diego Zarate and Dmitri Kostyunin add an international flair to the faculty.  Zarate (Spanish Teacher) is from Argentina and Kostyunin (Oceanography Teacher) hails from Russia.

 




 

2007 Test Scores
The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) are a framework of basic skills students in each grade level should learn in English, math, science, social studies, and technology.

The SOL tests are given each spring to measure students' success in meeting these state standards. State benchmarks for 2007 is a 70 percent pass rate in all subjects.

After Graduation
68 percent of students planned to continue their education at two-or four-year colleges. Another 19 percent plan to join the military, and another 6 percent plan to attend technical schools.

Nansemond River students have captured awards in the following areas:
DECA regional, state winners and international competitions.
Governor’s School for Arts, Summer Residential Governors’ Schools - 4 students selected.
Chorus - district and state winners (named a finalist in the National Grammy in Our Schools competition.
BETA Club students winners in state competitions and compete nationally.
Marching Warriors place in district, regional and national band competitions.
