The staff at Northern Shores is dedicated to fostering respect for individual differences, communicating high expectations, and helping students develop positive personal qualities while working toward mastery of the Virginia Standards of Learning.

The staff and students at Northern Shores are strongly supported by the community, parents, and an actively involved PTA. Northern Shores’ staff is committed to providing a strong and challenging educational program in a safe environment. Each student at Northern Shores is given the opportunity to learn through a variety of teaching strategies in a culturally rich and intellectually stimulating learning environment.

The Northern Shores general education program provides opportunities to integrate students with special learning needs in a variety of inclusive academic and nonacademic experiences. All Northern Shores students have many opportunities to expand their experiences in the areas of technology, art, music, and physical education.

By encouraging multicultural sharing, promoting and expanding technology advances, and keeping at the forefront of current learning and teaching theories, Northern Shores is proud to continue its tradition of academic excellence.

Shining Stars

Northern Shores students and staff raised more than $8,000 in charitable contributions for United Way, Suffolk Education Foundation, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, the Food Bank, Coats for Kids and Toys for Tots.
Northern Shores teachers recognize an average of 50 Students of the Month each month, totalling more than 450 students a year.
PTA Membership - Northern Shores is very proud of the PTA’s effort to support the school’s overall educational program. The PTA has averaged more than 400 members per year for the 2002-03 through 2006-07 school years.


 

2007 Test Scores
The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) are a framework of basic skills students in each grade level should learn in English, math, science, social studies, and technology.

The SOL tests are given each spring to measure students' success in meeting these state standards. The 2007 benchmark for elementary grades is a 75% pass rate in English, 70% in math, 70% in science and 70% in history.
