Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education
Beginning January 26, 2026, Suffolk Public Schools will provide middle and high school students with access to two educational Artificial Intelligence (AI) resources: Google Gemini and NotebookLM.
These tools are designed to support learning, enhance creativity, and help students generate and organize ideas in responsible, age-appropriate ways. We believe AI can be a powerful learning support when used responsibly. By helping students learn how to evaluate information, think critically, and use digital tools ethically, we are preparing them to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.
Generative AI can be a valuable tool to support student learning, but its use in assignments must be carefully managed to ensure it aligns with educational goals and integrity standards. Unless explicitly permitted, students should not use AI for their assignments.
When AI use is allowed, teachers will clarify:

Whether AI may be used as a coach (to help generate ideas or provide feedback), or

As a collaborator (assisting in the creative process).
Teachers will receive support and resources to model, monitor, and guide responsible AI use in the classroom. Families and students will also have access to informational resources to help them understand appropriate and ethical AI use.
Any misuse of technology, including the inappropriate or dishonest use of AI, will be addressed according to the SPS Student Code of Conduct.

AI as Collaborator: My work demonstrates a seamless integration of AI-generated content and my own input, reflecting a strong ability to collaborate with AI much like an in-class partner. I guide and refine the AI's work, thoughfully evaluating its output and deciding what to include in my final product.
AI as Coach: My work demonstrates MY original thinking, with AI used as a tool for brainstorming, minor corrections, or fact-checking. I completed the main task independently and incorporated feedback from AI to refine my work while my original thinking is evident in my final product.
