Athletics & Extracurriculars

First and foremost, we hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. We know this pandemic has been stressful to many. We recognize that exercising and participating in activities like sports and organizations can be a healthy way to cope with stress and connect with our community. We are excited to let you know that we will continue with Virginia High School League (VHSL) sports and extracurricular activities with the following considerations to protect our students, families, and community.

Suffolk Public Schools has postponed all pre-season workouts, Winter Season tryouts, and face-to-face meetings for all VHSL sports and extracurricular activities until November 15, 2021. On September 9, 2021, the Suffolk Public School Board voted for all students, coaches, and sponsors to receive their COVID-19 vaccination or be subject to mandatory testing. Students not receiving the complete COVID-19 vaccination will be required to submit to weekly testing before tryouts. All students who wish to participate in extracurricular activities and the VHSL Winter and Spring Seasons must be fully vaccinated or submit to weekly testing.

Fall VHSL sports have been grandfathered in and may continue with practice and athletic contests. The School Boards decision to vaccinate students came after the Fall seasons had begun. Fall VHSL sports are inclusive of the following:

  • Football
  • Volleyball (Girls/Boys)
  • Golf (Girls/Boys)
  • Field Hockey
  • Sideline Cheer
  • Cross Country (Girls/Boys)
  • AFJROTC
  • Marching Band

The following activities are postponed until November 15, 2021:

  • All VHSL (Virginia High School League) Winter Sports tryouts and all pre-season workouts;
  • All Middle School athletic team practices, tryouts, and games;
  • All Middle/High School Clubs and Organizations in-person meetings and activities.  Clubs and Organizations are encouraged to have meetings virtually until November 15, 2021.

*Children in middle school younger than 12 and are NOT eligible for the vaccine may still participate in clubs and organizations, so long as they adhere to our SPS mask-wearing guidelines.

Winter VHSL sports and extracurricular activities postponement does not impact tutoring, the SAT, or Saturday School activities.
