The health and safety of students and staff is the top priority when making decisions regarding COVID-19. Suffolk Public Schools has and will continue to work in collaboration with local health officials in making decisions regarding quarantine/isolation and classroom/school closures.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Virginia Department of Health encourage school divisions to look at several indicators when making decisions regarding mitigation strategies and the learning environment. Community levels and community transmission are two items that we currently reference. Both data points can be found on the CDC website at https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#county-view?list_select_state=all_states&list_select_county=all_counties&data-type=Risk&null=RiskInformation specific to Suffolk is posted here on a weekly basis.

- Case disclaimer by building:
One case does not equal one individual.  The total number of cases may include a single individual who was in multiple locations.  For example, if an individual who tested positive for COVID-19 was in three different schools, that would count as three cases in the total number.  Cases are reported both for PCR and rapid test results.

- Outbreak defined:
Per the Virginia Department of Health, an outbreak in a school is defined as at least three confirmed cases of COVID-19 where persons are linked by a common exposure to an ill person, setting, event, and time period. Transmission must occur within the school facility or at a school-sponsored event among students, faculty, staff, or visitors to be classified as a school-associated outbreak.
