#WorldReadAloudDay 2021
Posted on 02/05/2021

The first Wednesday of every February, LitWorld asks for millions worldwide to celebrate the power of reading aloud with #WorldReadAloudDay. On February 3, 2021, Suffolk Public Schools joined in the conversation. Several of our teachers and administrators recorded themselves reading some of our favorite stories for children of all grade levels - (k-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12).

A special thank you goes out to our Community Engagement Department for recording Karyn Childs, granddaughter of Florence Bowser, for a special bedtime story for our SPS students. Karyn is the author of "Where Eagles Soar: The Story of Florence Bowser Elementary School."

In relation to Black History month, the book gives background into the history of Florence Bowser. The synopsis reads, "It all started with a one-room schoolhouse that existed for Black elementary students in Nansemond County, Virginia. With improvements and growth, the school continues to educate many generations of all students in the City of Suffolk. An improved school, The Florence Graded School, was opened for the 1920-21 school year. Later, Florence Bowser Elementary School opened in 1964, and finally, the newest school opened for the 2018-19 school year!"
