Adaptive Physical Education (ADP)
Suffolk Public Schools is committed to providing all students with meaningful opportunities to participate in physical education, including opportunities to learn and participate alongside their peers whenever appropriate. Adapted Physical Education (APE) provides specially designed instruction for students with disabilities who may need additional support to participate safely and successfully in physical activity. Based on each student’s individual needs, instruction may include modifications to activities, equipment, rules, teaching strategies, or the learning environment.
APE also supports inclusive participation by providing individualized accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies that help students engage meaningfully with their peers. Through these supports, students can develop physical skills, improve fitness, build independence and confidence, and establish habits that encourage lifelong participation in physical activity.
Adapted Physical Education can support students in developing:
- Physical fitness and wellness
- Gross motor skills
- Coordination and balance
- Confidence and self-esteem
