Elementary School

The elementary school educational experience enables students to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for academic achievement. At the start of each year, parents are given the grade level objectives and expectations for their children. The programs include Early Start, Kindergarten, and Grades 1st through 5th.  The four core areas are English, Mathematics, Science, and History/Social Science. 

The reading and writing curriculum encompasses a comprehensive balanced literacy approach to instruction. The curriculum is aligned with the Virginia English Standards of Learning. In kindergarten through third grade, the primary goal is to teach all students to read fluently and to comprehend a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. In fourth and fifth grades, students continue to gain and enhance strategies for comprehending and analyzing texts that include all genres and relate to all subjects. Students also acquire the ability to make effective use of the written language. 

The mathematics curriculum is aligned with the Virginia Math Standards of Learning objectives. There is a strong emphasis on problem solving in the mathematics program. Mathematical skills are integrated as much as possible throughout all content areas.  Strands include Number and Number Sense, Computation and Estimation, Measurement, Geometry, Probability and Statistics, and Patterns, Functions and Algebra.  

The science curriculum offers many opportunities for students to participate in scientific investigations. Hands on activities are used to reinforce the Virginia’s Science Standards of Learning. Areas of focus include observing, asking questions, sequencing, measuring, classifying, comparing, inferring, recording information and using materials safely.  Areas of focus include Scientific Investigation, Reasoning and Logic; Force, Motion, Energy, and Matter; Life Processes, and Living Systems; Interrelationships in Earth/Space Systems; and Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change Resources. 

The overall goal of the history/social science curriculum is to prepare students for informed and responsible citizenship. The curriculum is aligned with the Virginia History/Social Science Standards of Learning objectives, including the strands of History, Geography, Civics, and Economics.
