The special education department of Suffolk Public Schools believes that every student has a right to free and appropriate education. In keeping with that philosophy, a full range of services has been developed in Special Education serving children with disabilities, age 2 to 21 years of age.

Upcoming Special Education Workshops

The workshops listed below are offered by The Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC).

Learning About Your Child's Development |NOW OPEN - through August 15. This FREE self-paced online workshop series, facilitated by PEATC, provides parents with the foundations, tips, and tools on helping their child learn to read. This series will be divided into four sessions and include topics such as: skills needed to learn to read; how reading typically develops; why children might struggle to read; and signs of risk for reading difficulties

IEP Clinic for Military Families | September 26, 2020 at 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. PEATC, in collaboration with Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Child and Youth Programs, is hosting 30-minute virtual IEP consultations on Saturday, September 26th, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Transition University | October 11, 2020. Join us for this FREE 5-week SELF-PACED online course that focuses on providing parent-friendly transition information to help make transition planning easier. This course is designed for parents/caregivers of elementary, middle or high school students that receive special education services. The goal is to share factual information on transition services and to help make the transition from school services to the adult services world less confusing.

Services for Students Identified as Hearing or Visually Impaired

The Code of Virginia at § 22.1-217.01 was amended and requires school boards to annually post information on school division Web sites and to inform the parents of students who are identified as hearing or visually impaired of its availability as follows:

"The Department of Education shall annually prepare and distribute to local school boards packets of information describing the educational and other services available through the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, and the Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired to students who are identified as hearing impaired or visually impaired. Local school boards shall annually post this information on the school division's website and inform the parents of those students who are identified as hearing impaired or visually impaired of its availability. School boards shall ensure that packets of such information are available in an accessible format for review by parents who do not have Internet access."
