Sixth-Graders need Tdap Booster before September

The 2014 Virginia Assembly passed a law, effective July 1, 2014, which requires all rising sixth grade students to have a tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) booster shot prior to entry into the sixth grade.

The Department of Education has advised there will be no grace period allowing school attendance for students who have not obtained the Tdap immunization. It is vital that the immunization be obtained prior to the beginning of school in September 2018.

Please review your child's shot record. We ask that you obtain the needed immunization for your child as soon as possible from your family doctor or local health department. (There is no fee for immunizations obtained at the health department.) Once immunization is obtained, you must provide the medical documentation to the school nurse. This information will become a part of your child's health folder.

Again, there is no grace period that would allow your child to attend school without having received the required immunization. It is imperative that you schedule your child to receive the immunization as soon as possible to prevent a delay in your child starting school in September.
