Academic Interventions for Parents
At Suffolk Public Schools, we are committed to ensuring that every child has the tools they need to succeed academically. That’s why we offer academic interventions – targeted supports designed to help students build confidence, improve their skills, and stay on track for success.
What Are Academic Interventions?
Academic interventions are structured strategies and tools that provide extra support for students who may need additional help in specific areas. These interventions are not one-size-fits-all; they are designed to meet students where they are and guide them toward progress. Some of the strategies include:
-
Visual Schedules – Picture- or word-based schedules that help students manage time, transition between tasks, and stay organized throughout the day.
-
Growth Mindset Practices – Encouraging students to focus on effort and perseverance, not just results, to help them develop resilience and a love of learning.
-
Positive Feedback & Strategy Praise – Teaching parents and teachers to recognize hard work, problem-solving skills, and persistence, which motivates students to keep trying.
-
Framing Mistakes as Learning Opportunities – Helping children understand that errors are part of the learning process, building confidence and problem-solving skills.
Monthly "Quick & Easy" Academic Interventions for Families
Each month, SPS will share a new Academic Intervention Focus with families. These monthly highlights will give parents ideas they can put into practice right away—whether it’s trying a new strategy to help with homework, using a visual schedule at home, or practicing growth mindset conversations.
