Early Start
What is Early Start?
Suffolk Public Schools offers a full day Pre-Kindergarten program through the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI), known as Early Start, for children with the greatest need. This program aims to reduce disparities at school entry and address risk factors that may contribute to early academic challenges.
This full day program is designed for children who will be 4 years old by September 30, 2026, live in the City of Suffolk, and may benefit from an extra year of support to prepare for kindergarten success.
Acceptance Criteria
Acceptance into the program is determined on eligibility criteria and identified risk factors, not on a first come, first-served basis.
You may qualify if:
- Your family/child live in the City of Suffolk
- Your child turns 4 years of age by September 30, 2026
- Your child or family is experiencing economic or educational risk factors, such as:
- Family income
- Housing instability
- Parent/guardian educational background
- Special needs or disabilities
- Your child’s language, motor, cognitive, and social/emotional development
Additional factors are considered with lower priority.
Acceptance into the program does not guarantee placement at a home-zoned school. School assignments are determined by Early Start zoning, and transportation is provided.
The application for the 2026–2027 school year will open on February 9, 2026,
and close on May 22, 2026.
Applications will reopen on May 23, 2026, for waitlist consideration only.
