NRHS Alumni Highlight: James "Jimmy" Cox

James (Jimmy) Cox is a class of 2009 graduate from Nansemond River High School. During his time as a warrior, James participated in the NRHS Marching Band.

After high school, James attended Howard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Communications in Telecommunications Management and was commissioned as a Signal Officer in 2013. After completing the
Signal Officer Basic Course, he was assigned to the 63rd Expeditionary Signal Battalion (ESB), 35th Signal Brigade at Ft. Gordon, GA.

Upon arrival to the 63rd ESB, James’ first assignment was Platoon Leader of Bravo Company. Next, he served as the Company Executive Officer for Alpha Company, and played a crucial role in the unit’s relocation to Ft. Stewart, GA. From Fort Stewart, James deployed to Baghdad, Iraq as the Regional Network Operations & Security Center.

Upon redeployment, James attended and completed the Signal Captains Career Course at Ft. Gordon, GA, in November 2017. His next assignment was as the Battalion Communications Officer for 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC in December 2017.

In the fall of 2019, Captain (CPT) Cox was forwarded the
opportunity to become the Company Commander of the 178th Signal Company, 82nd ABN DIV comprised of 54 Paratroopers, taking direction under his leadership.

Captain (CPT) Cox’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon,
Operation Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal Expeditionary and the Army Service Ribbon.

Captain (CPT) Cox’s military education includes the Signal Officer Basic Course, Airborne School, Combative Level 1 Course, Signal Captains Career Course, Unit Movement Officer Course, Air Assault School and the U.S. Army Ranger School.

Captain Cox is also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
