Dr. John B. Gordon III
Superintendent of Schools

Greetings,

To say I am excited about starting as Superintendent for Suffolk Public Schools is an understatement. I feel so honored and lucky to be able to join such a strong school division that includes excellent students, an outstanding staff, a collaborative school board, and a supportive school community. It is my goal to meet each and every one of you over the next couple of weeks as we begin our journey of making every student a star!

I wanted to share a little bit of insight into some of my goals for the year so together we are building the best SPS possible:

  • I want to celebrate our school division. I think it is important to recognize our students when they reach their goals, show their potential, and become the proud citizens of Suffolk that we all want them to be.

I believe in “bragging” on our excellent teachers and staff who work with our most prized possessions, our students every day. I can’t wait to see the creativity and innovation in the classroom first hand!
  • Instructionally, I will focus on closing the achievement gap, increasing the number of students who achieve advanced scores on the Standards of Learning Assessments, and increasing our graduation rate. I am committed to ensuring all students advance. In order to do this, we are going to talk with our students, our families, our teachers, building leaders, and School Administrative Office leadership.

We need to really ask ourselves, “What does a Suffolk Public Schools graduate look like?” In preparing our students for their very bright futures, we need to ensure that we develop individualized learning plans for every student to include an increase in active engagement in the classroom through more project based-learning, instructional technology, and student inquiry.
  • Lastly, we need to ALWAYS work together. I am a firm believer of family, teamwork, transparency and efficiency. We are going to build on our positive school division climate so that everyone wants to live here, go to school here, and work here. In order for this to happen we are going to depend on our partners in city government to continue our strong relationship, depend on our parents and guardians to participate in TWO-WAY communication, and count on our students and teachers to create authentic learning experiences that engage everyone!
