Community Gathers for “The Upstanders” Film Screening on Cyberbullying Awareness

Suffolk Public Schools, in partnership with the Partners for Community Health Collaboration, recently hosted a powerful screening of The Upstanders—an inspiring documentary that explores real stories from teens, families, and educators confronting the growing issue of cyberbullying.

Held on Wednesday, October 22, at King’s Fork High School, the evening brought together parents, community members, and mental health professionals for an open conversation about the impacts of social media and the importance of standing up for others.

The film emphasized empathy, resilience, and the courage it takes to create positive change both online and offline. Following the screening, attendees participated in a live panel discussion featuring Cindy Devers, Coordinator of Student Support for SPS; Kails Lovette, President of ODU’s NAMI-On-Campus Club; and Ashley Spratley, LCSW with Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters. Panelists offered valuable insights, practical strategies, and community resources available to families navigating challenges related to digital behavior and mental wellness.

As part of the division’s ongoing efforts to promote safe and inclusive learning environments, this event was designed especially for parents and caregivers seeking to understand how SPS addresses cyberbullying prevention. Those who attended were also eligible to receive a free ticket to an upcoming SPS athletic event as a thank-you for their engagement.

We extend our gratitude to all who joined this meaningful conversation. Together, the community continues to take important steps toward fostering kindness, connection, and digital citizenship among students.
