Student Transportation & Resource Cards: Safety in Every Scan—Coming January 2026
We are proud to announce the upcoming launch of the S.T.A.R. Card (Student Transportation and Resource Card) program—an innovative initiative designed to enhance student safety, improve daily routines, and strengthen accountability across all schools.
Beginning in January 2026, every Suffolk Public Schools student—from pre-K through 12th grade—will receive a S.T.A.R. Card, badge holder, and school-issued lanyard. Two schools, Southwestern Elementary School and Forest Glen Middle School, will pilot the program this fall. Following the pilot phase, the S.T.A.R. Card system will expand divisionwide, reaching all 14,500 students by the end of the 2025–2026 school year. Students will be expected to wear their cards visibly during the school day.
“The S.T.A.R. Card program represents another step forward in our ongoing commitment to safety, innovation, and operational excellence,” said Superintendent Dr. John B. Gordon III. “This is more than an identification badge—it’s a way to keep our students safe, connected, and supported every day.”
During Phase I, students will begin using their S.T.A.R. Cards for bus transportation, scanning their cards when boarding and exiting the bus. This process will allow Suffolk Public Schools to maintain accurate ridership records and provide families with greater peace of mind, knowing students are arriving and departing as expected. In addition to transportation, the S.T.A.R. Card will serve as a secure student identification badge within each school building. It will play an important role during safety procedures and reunification efforts by helping staff quickly and accurately identify students when needed.
Looking ahead, Suffolk Public Schools is exploring opportunities to expand the capabilities of the S.T.A.R. Card. In future phases, students may be able to use their cards to check out library books, purchase meals in the cafeteria, or scan for attendance during late arrivals or early dismissals.
We remain committed to keeping families informed as the rollout continues. Additional details will be shared prior to full implementation to ensure every student and parent is prepared for the next steps.
