City and school officials broke ground on the new elementary and middle schools to open in September 2018.  The new schools are designed for project-based learning and encourage teaching outside the classroom. Suffolk 3rd graders dress in togas and classic Roman laurel wreaths during Greek and Roman Day. Students taste the food, practice writing and experience long ago culture. Nansemond River High School's Marching Band performed for students at Creekside Elementary to benefit the March of Dimes. The performance sparked an interest in the young students to consider playing an instrument. Fourth graders at Mack Benn, Jr. Elementary put learning into action. By creating roller coasters, they learn how force, energy, and motion affect a marble's speed.
