Mr. Derrick Bryant
Mr. Derrick Bryant is a graduate of Norfolk State University and served as an assistant principal at KFHS before becoming principal in 2019.
He is a Suffolk native, attending John F. Kennedy High School, Lakeland High School and Nansemond River High School. As a senior, he was an all-state selection and led NRHS to a 27-1 record and the state Group AA Championship. He was fifth in his high school graduating class. At Norfolk State, he continued to be successful both on and off the court. He graduated from Norfolk State with a degree in business administration and management and has earned a pair of master’s degrees. He finished 10th on the Spartan’s all-time scoring list with 1710 points. From there, he played professional basketball in Europe and South America for ten years.
Mr. Bryant spent ten years as a business teacher at Nansemond River before coming to King’s Fork as an assistant principal in 2016. After three years as an AP, he became principal in 2019, at the beginning of the pandemic. He credits great mentorship from Dr. Ron Leigh and Thomas McLemore(NR) for his smooth transition from assistant principal to principal. His continued focus is increasing the graduation rate and reaching his goal of having KF become a 90/90/90 school – 90-percent pass rates on math, science and English Standards of Learning tests.
