Creekside Elementary School's Breakfast In Boots

In celebration of the Month of the Military Child, Creekside Elementary School invited active duty and retired military parents and grandparents to have breakfast with their student.

JFKMS Literacy Night

A night of reading, writing, and fun, John F. Kennedy Middle School students and their parents went on an international adventure. They learned how literacy is their passport to a whole new world of knowledge, opportunities and success as they journeyed through the halls of JFK, where every classroom was a different country.

Little Feet Meet 2024

Sponsored by the Special Olympics Virginia, Little Feet Meet events are held in school divisions across the state as a way for schools to engage students with and without intellectual disabilities. The Little Feet Meet specifically, is a culmination of Special Olympics’ partnership with local schools to build inclusive communities and a level playing field for athletes of all abilities. We want every student at every school to know that we celebrate all abilities and we believe in this inclusive community that Special Olympics is helping to build.

Florence Bowser Elementary School Purple Star Ceremony

Florence Bowser Elementary School unveiled its purple star banner. The Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation's military.

VDOE State Superintendent Visits SPS

VDOE State Superintendent, Dr. Lisa Coons and Chief of Staff, Dr. Jeremy Raley visited Lakeland High School and Southwestern Elementary School to experience the excellent things happening in The Center for Performing and Production Arts students and get a glimpse of Zearn Math in action.

Gowns For Crowns

Nansemond River High School DECA Chapter, in partnership with many local businesses and organizations, hosted their 4th annual Gowns for Crowns Prom Dress Giveaway on March 16th. Young ladies from all over Hampton Roads were able to find a beautiful, gently used dress for their prom.

Youth Art Festival 2024

In conjunction with YAM (Youth Art Month), Suffolk Public Schools Department of Fine and Performing Arts expanded this event to include all of our programs in the Spring arts festival. Held at Booker T. Washington Elementary School, the festival featured music, theatre, and music production performances, as well as various community partners and vendors.

35th Annual Young Artists and Authors Showcase and Awards Ceremony

Sister Cities International hosted the 35th annual Young Artists and Authors Showcase and Awards Ceremony at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. Several talented students from all three of our high schools had their work on display, from paintings, poems, and drawings to digital art, music, and mixed media.

ODU Athletes Read to SPS Elementary Students

Old Dominion University student athletes volunteered a couple hours of their day at SPS elementary schools, reading to 3rd grade students. In partnership with the United Way of Hampton Roads, Kilby Shores Elementary School, Nansemond Parkway Elementary School, and Booker T. Washington Elementary School students were able to meet and ask questions to athletes who play the sports they watch and aspire to play.

15th Annual CTE Professional Student Conference

The 15th Annual Career & Technical Education Professional Student Conference, held at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront, provides 9th-grade students an opportunity to interact with career-related programs offered in Suffolk Public Schools. Instructors from the College and Career Academy at Pruden engaged students in workplace activities within the Cosmetology/Master Barber, Culinary Arts, and Emergency Medical Technician career fields.

National Night Out 2023

SPS hosted 3 National Night Out events this year. Creekside Elementary School, Lakeland High School, and King's Fork High School all enjoyed a great deal of success with tremendous support from non-profit organizations and community partners.
