Behavior Interventions for Parents
-
Supporting Student Success
At Suffolk Public Schools, we are committed to helping every child grow socially and emotionally as well as academically. That’s why we offer behavior interventions – targeted supports designed to help students build positive habits, strengthen self-management skills, and create a safe, respectful learning environment for everyone.
A Monthly Focus on Student Success
Each month, SPS will share a new Behavior Intervention Focus with families. These monthly highlights will give parents practical ideas they can use right away—whether it’s establishing consistent routines, reinforcing positive behaviors at home, or practicing calming strategies together.

What Are Behavior Interventions?
Behavior interventions are structured strategies and tools that provide students with additional support in developing appropriate behaviors and social skills. These interventions are not one-size-fits-all; they are designed to meet students where they are and help them make meaningful progress.
- Behavior Expectations & Visual Reminders – Posting clear, consistent rules and expectations helps students understand what is expected and how to meet those expectations.
- Positive Reinforcement Systems – Using praise, tokens, or incentives to recognize appropriate behavior and encourage repetition of positive actions.
- Calming & Self-Regulation Strategies – Teaching students breathing exercises, “take a break” routines, or grounding strategies to manage frustration and emotions.
- Restorative Conversations – Guiding students to reflect on their behavior, understand its impact, and make amends in a constructive way.
- Consistent Routines – Establishing predictable structures at home and school to reduce anxiety and support appropriate behavior.
What It Offers to Parents
Parents receive practical, ready-to-use tools and resources to reinforce positive behavior at home. These may include printable behavior charts, family routine templates, tips for using praise effectively, and guidance for responding to challenging behaviors in calm, consistent ways. SPS Behavior Resources provide families with step-by-step ideas for supporting social-emotional growth and positive conduct.
Why It Matters
When families and schools work together to support positive behavior, students thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. Behavior interventions:
- Build Self-Regulation – Students learn to identify feelings, manage impulses, and make responsible choices.
- Boost Confidence – Consistent positive feedback helps children recognize their strengths and progress.
- Strengthen Home–School Connection – Parents gain insight into their child’s behavioral goals and learn strategies to support them.
- Create Safe, Supportive Environments – Reinforcing positive behavior at home and school fosters respect, responsibility, and a sense of belonging for all students.
